OH MY GOD. This month has really been something else. Jack has changed so much it is incredible. I'm a little worried how much will change now in this coming month because he isn't slowing down. Luckily I will be done teaching for the summer on Friday so I won't miss a beat! :) Can't believe he has been outside my belly as long as he has been inside my belly!
Stats
As of his doctor's appointment today Jack weighed 17 lbs and 11.5 ounces (less than 25th %tile) and is 27.5 inches (25th%tile) tall. Since his last appointment 3 MONTHS ago he has only gained 10.5 ounces and 1 inch. The doctor said it is perfect and matches how he has been growing. They also did a toe prick to check his iron levels and they were superb. Yay for my vegan breastfed baby! He's still in 9 month clothes and 12 month pjs but is VERY slowly moving to SOME 12 month clothes.
Eating
Jack LOVES LOVES LOVES blueberries. Let me back up by saying, Baby led weaning is going awesome and he is great at feeding himself. If we are eating he wants to eat whatever we have and will fuss until we give him some. Example, I was at Seva and as SOON as the General Tso's cauliflower hit the table he was squirming and reaching for it. Anyway, although he is an amazing eater, it can be messy at times. It is getting better as he is learning to feed himself but man, blueberries, he can eat those with such precision and he will eat every single last one. He ADORES them. I cut them in half and he gobbles them up. I gave him blueberry oatmeal and he picked out all the blueberries before touching the oatmeal. Whole Foods had organic blueberries for $2/pint so I bought 8 or so, froze them and hopefully they will last a while. If he keeps this up we will probably have blueberry muffins instead of cupcakes at his first birthday! This month he also tried cauliflower, blackberries, chickpeas, veggie burger, black beans, kale, salsa, black eyed peas and roasted red peppers (he loves red peppers, too). We are running out of "new" foods. He has really tried all fruits and veggies practically. His favorite dinner besides blueberries is veggie lo mein. I always gave to give him seconds or thirds! We are still nursing and I am SOOOOOOO looking forward to being done pumping on Friday. I can NOT wait. Lastly, he's taken to hand feeding us. It's so cute. I don't know where he's learned this since we don't hand feed him.
Sleep
With teething and an active mind trying to figure out crawling we have had a little bit of sleep regression. He will be asleep but thrashes around trying to get comfortable and lots of night nursing. However, this month he's had a few night with minimal nursing and sleeping through the night but once to nurse. He is sleeping on his tummy in the crib for naps and our bed for night time. I am fine taking things slow and going at his pace. I'm going to slowly see if he is ready for more crib sleeping at night once I am out of work but without any tears. Crying it out isn't for us. I like the gentler approach of waiting it out.
Development
Wow, so much going on this month. First, he started crawling on 5.26. I was in the shower while Trev was gone and I put Jack in our closet with some toys. He threw his toy and I told him he would have to wait until I got out to get it. Well, impatient little boy decided that wouldn't cut it and decided to crawl to get it. I was stunned! And honestly, he hasn't stopped since and is so on the go and active. We have a baby gate now, electric covers and scaled back some of our decorations (which with our minimalist approach, we both really like how it looks anyway and will probably will keep it like this). That will probably be all the baby proofing we will do. We don't really have too much that is dangerous and we have an open floor plan that allows us to see him from pretty much everywhere so we can keep an eye on him. The only difficult part is he is a magnet for Sofia's water and food bowls. Sof eats all her food immediately but the water we have to put up if we are in the kitchen otherwise there is a huge mess! He is LOVING chasing the cats and growling at them as he comes after them...the cats look at me like "Help!"...haha.
He is also pulling himself up really well on the couch and will let go often. He wants to walk and cruise this way, I think he will be doing that within a month or so (cruising, not walking!). He is also waving hello and good-bye (and loves to wave to himself every time we go past a mirror). Speaking of which, if he sees your phone or computer he shrieks with excitement because he wants to see pictures of himself. I will put my pictures up on my phone and he will go through them laughing at each one (and sliding them himself!). He can clap his hands when excited and happy and will do it if you start singing "If you're happy and you know it" or "Patt-a-cake". If you're lucky he will even clap his hands with his feet as well!
He had a really bad runny nose for 24 hours which we thought was his first cold but it turns out it was teething. He has the two bottom middle teeth coming in and I am super excited for this because he will be able to eat bigger pieces of different types of food. He isn't super crabby from the teething, he just comfort nurses a little more. We've had success with nursing, the amber teething necklace and a few nights of Hyland's homeopathic teething tablets. No baby Orajel or Tylenol here! Cold teethers really don't seem to help but he does like eating frozen berries in a mesh feeder if his gums are hurting him.
He is communicating more by letting us know what he doesn't want. he shakes his head no, pushes away, shrugs, points a little bit and is making a lot of new noises, specifically g noises. He will pucker and lean in for kisses with Trev and I, knows where to look when he hears the garage door open (one of us coming home), throws Sofia's toys to her and plays tug of war, splashes A LOT in the tub and has started enjoying falling asleep by bouncing in his Jumperoo. His favorite books are "Chicka Chicka Boom Boom" and "Mr. Brown Can Moo". Can you believe ALL of this has happened in ONE month? I surely can not.
Random
Well Trev and I closed on our refi and hopefully will have our mortgage paid off in 15 years! We paid our last car payment on Friday and managed to pay off $16,000 in car loans in 2 months. We now have to replenish our savings and then we will do some things around the house (appliances, flooring). I really think our minimalist lifestyle helps with that. We don't buy a bunch of stuff we don't need and are happy with what we have. Trev has been losing some weight (and so have I since I cut out sugars) and so we have been checking out second hand stores instead. We were able to get some EXPENSIVE clothing for about $30. I got a pair of Seven for Mankind jeans for $5 and they look brand new! Trevor got a pair of AE cargo shorts, and two t-shirts (from AE and BR) for $25. Not bad. And better for the environment, too (I'll talk about why when I do a book review of a book I am reading). We spend less time shopping, fixing, wanting, cleaning, etc. when we have less crap. We love it!
I took Jack to the SASHA farm sanctuary this past Sunday and we also went to Hess Hathaway to see animals. He adores them and I love giving him experiences with animals so that he has compassion towards them. I don't know that he has a favorite. He enjoyed them all! I also bought him a few vegan/vegetarian children's books.
They say 9 months on, 9 months off for baby weight. I actually have lost 10 pounds of pre-pregnancy weight and weight what I did on my wedding day. I can't believe it. My belly isn't super flat like it was on that day BUT I do feel pretty good about how I look now. I'm hoping my belly flattens as time goes on...only to get pregnant again eventually...lol.
My plans for the summer are to touch up and paint some of our walls and ceilings before we get new floors, hopefully meet my friend Lela at a farm sanctuary, do some mom and baby yoga and spend lots of time snuggling with my baby. I am really looking forward to lazy mornings, daily walks and slowing life down. I don't want to fill up every second with an activity. I want to just wake up and see where the day takes us! Because at the end of the summer he will be one and no longer a baby! It is time for me to cherish my baby while he still is one. :)
